Once again I was sifting through the bargain bin, and this time, I came away with a pack each of 2004 Upper Deck and 2006 UD Special F/X, and a fat pack each of 2007 Topps Series, Series II, and 2006 Topps Update. I won’t bother re-hashing the fat packs, as there wasn’t anything particularly noteworthy there, just set fillers. But in the other two packs, I found the following few cards.

This card was in the pack of Special F/X . THIS is a sweet-looking WBC insert, unlike the ones in this year’s Topps Update. The card itself too is much better looking than the base cards in the pack, as the shiny whatever-it’s-called refractor coating isn’t as obnoxious on this card as it is on the others.

This card was in there as well, although if anything, it’s a testimony to the pointlessness of serial numbering on cards. I mean really, a serial numbered checklist? Should I really ascribe that much more value to this particular card since only 150 of them were printed?

In the pack of 2004 Upper Deck, I was amused by the juxtaposition of these two cards. The first one is of Brent Mayne, who although pictured in Royals uniform, started the season with the Diamondbacks before finishing the season (and his career) with the Dodgers. The second one is of journeyman outfielder Jay Payton, pictured sometime in 2003 at Dodger Stadium.

Of course, in 2004, Paul Lo Duca (and Juan Encarnacion) was traded to the Marlins in return for Hee Seop Choi, Brad Penny, and Bill Murphy. A day later, Brent Mayne arrived along with Steve Finley from the Diamondbacks, in return for Koyie Hill, Reggie Abercrombie and Bill Murphy. In spite of the hand-wringing from the Bill Plaschke and friends, the trade improved the Dodgers as they made their way to a division title.

And after Lo Duca’s departure, the Dodger catching duo became David Ross, backed up by Mayne. In the Payton photo below, that’s Ross’ glove. That is, I’m pretty sure it is. Of the catchers who played for the Dodgers in 2003 (Lo Duca, Ross, Todd Hundley, Hill), only Ross wore a black mitt.

But enough of Dodger “guest appearances” on cards! I will say one thing about 04 Upper Deck — as always, these are some nice photos. Take a look at this Adam Dunn card.

That’s just a sweet picture, which is more than I can say about this 06 Topps Update card of Lo Duca and David Wright. This is the best picture they could find of these guys?
